Although plainly written, this is an extraordinary tale of a world which existed less than a century ago. When my husband started reading it, I commented that the lack of indoor plumbing and electricity was common in rural areas in the early 20th century - certainly true for my mother's family. He responded, "Just read it." Their lives were incredibly primitive. The book is organized more by theme than chronologically, so we learn about the different kinds of work all family members did at various times of the year and their interaction with others ranging from their few neighbors to the rich folks who enjoyed the resorts, to the Indians, mostly Washoe, who had also long summered at Tahoe. It wasn't all work and no play, as she details in chapters on entertainment in the winter and summer. Probably the most interesting insight gained in this book is the independence of the children in the family from a very young age - helicopter parents may faint dead away reading this.

"Survival at Boiler Point is the story of a brave family of seven: father, mother, four boys, and a baby girl, moving to a remote place on the shore of Lake Tahoe in 1914. The only communication with the outside world in the winter was by boat. the mail boat came once a week, if at all, due to high winds and stormy weather.

The Mandeville family's survival depended on the good Lord and their own abilities, ingenuity, and good sense. This is a story of perseverance, hard work, and determination, but also much fun, on the shore of one of the world's most beautiful lakes."

Trade paperback, 271 pp, large format, with b&w illustrations throughout. Amazingly, this book also reproduces many pages of Sydney James Mandeville's correspondence and his fish and game logs which detail his work as a fish and game warden.
