Lucille Ball was one of tv's foremost pioneers and, quite likely, the preeminent woman in the history of television. As a young contract player for MGM, Ball began her career as a Goldwyn Girl, moving up to become a moderately respected star of "B" movies. She came to television after nearly 20 years in film, gradually transforming from platinum blonde sex symbol to a wise-cracking redhead. Her first television program, I Love Lucy, premiered in 1951 and for the next 25 years Lucille Ball virtually ruled the airwaves in a series of situation comedies designed to exploit her elastic expressions, slapstick abilities and distinct verbal talents. A five-time Emmy award winner, the first woman inducted into the Television Academy's Hall of Fame, a recipient of a Genii Award and a Kennedy Center Honor, Lucille Ball was perhaps the most beloved of all television stars, and certainly the most recognizable. Her fan clubs are run in countries all over the world, and on social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace. Biographer Nick Yapp has written over thirty books on a wide range of subjects from poetry to law. He was a teacher for many years before becoming a writer and broadcaster. He has scripted over fifty programs for television and over 100 programs for the radio, as well as writing numerous short stories and travel pieces for The New York Times.

I was completely surprised to see this book sitting on a shelf at Barnes and Noble tonight. I wasn't aware any new Lucy books were coming out, but the book was priced $14.98 and because I love Lucy, I couldn't resist. The pictures really made the book, in my opinion. The information is stuff I've read time and again in other books, although I did enjoy several of the quotes from Lucy and others that were included. Many of the pictures were ones I had never seen before, some were in color and some were in black and white, but all were wonderful. I love seeing the progression of Lucy's life and career through pictures. Buy the book for the pictures alone. The text is familiar to fans of Lucy and it's also a little sloppy at times. Vivian Vance is referred to as Vivian "Vane" twice before the author finally gets it right. It is also noted that Lucy made her TV debut in 1959, when in fact, it was in 1949. He also kept referring to TV seasons as series, which got under my skin a little bit, but these minor complaints aside this is a great book. For anyone who wants to see more of Lucy in all her redheaded glory, this book and the amazing assortment of pictures within are well worth it.

Lucille Ball's career highlights coffee book with a few rare shots that all come from the GETTY IMAGES archive. As one turns page after page, Lucille Ball gets older and OLDER. Some of the candid shots reveal alot about how much makeup it took to makeup Lucille Ball as "Lucy".
The book is a good source for die hard "Lucy" fans who relish old Hollywood-style glam.
