Harry Paul is consulting partner with the Ken Blanchard Companies. John Christensen is a filmmaker, and the CEO of ChartHouse Learning, the leading producer of corporate learning films, including the Fish! video.

These types of books are written for corporate management types who are far removed from the people who work for them. You want to motivate employees - spend time with them, show them you value them as people and reward them accordingly

These types of books are written for corporate management types who are far removed from the people who work for them. You want to motivate employees - spend time with them, show them you value them as people and reward them accordingly. Find me a manager who does that instead of someone who sits up in his ivory tower, and wastes his time reading some ridiculous BS like FISH or Who Moved My Cheese. The bottom line is - anyone can make up a story.

This is an interesting book. I regret that it is, in my honest opinion, a naive description of a unique and unlikely story.

The entire premise behind this book is the assumption that people are kind, ready for a change and would welcome a more positive atmosphere at work. This is a huge mistake and at least two categories of social behaviors are absent from this tale: 1- some workers are content in this state of underachievement and mediocrity; it's not that they enjoy it but they are unwilling to change this or to participate in its evolution. 2- Another class of workers actually thrive in these highly destructive environments. They use the weakened mental state of their coworkers and the lack of social bond between them to enforce bullying and shaming as a pilar to establish their dominance. This book ignores these 2 categories entirely. It is assumed that everyone is motivated by a positive energy to improve their life and the one of others. This is a gross misunderstanding of the reality in our society and in our work environment.

I first learned of Fish! When I was working at my previous job. One of my colleagues had a training program with a video. I watched it and was captivated because it brings together all of the things I try to achieve in my day to day life:

Play (while you go through your daily routines because playing is the essence of having fun).
Choose your attitude (you can choose to be unhappy or you can choose to be happy; its up to you)
Be present (in everything you do; the past cannot be changed and the future has an infinite number of variables).
Make someone's day (and the happiness you see will make your day, too).

Great book and a timely one too. I had just had a conversation with my friend on how I hated work and needed some other distraction. But here and now, I feel I could do more and offer more both at work and at home.

Funny I don’t even know the author of this book but this will become my new relation bible both at work and at home.

Ps: am a blood romantic so I was thoroughly glad to see MJ and Lonnie end up together.

This book is inspired by the Fish Market at Pike Place Fish in Seattle. There fishmonger, have managed to turn their workplace into a fun and joyful market which features exceptional customer service.

This fish market inspired the authors to write a story of a manager who is asked to head up and turn around a very ineffective department. This manager then applies the secrets that helped turn the fish market into such a fun workplace, namely: choose your attitude, play, make their day, and last but not least be present.

A fun and insightful quick read, that reminds us that there is always room for play at work. My only criticism is that I wish there were more examples of applications in the workplace included.

Below are some key excerpts from the book that I found particularly insightful:

1- "I guess given the right conditions, any job can be dull."

2- "There is always a choice about the way you do your work, even if there is not a choice about the work itself...We can choose the attitude we bring to our work."

3- "There is something I know about you that you may not even know about yourself. You have within you more resources of energy than have ever been tapped, more talent than has ever been exploited, more talent than has ever been exploited, more strength than has ever been tested, and more to give than you have ever given."

4- "As you enter this place of work please choose to make today a great day. Your colleagues, customers, team members, and you yourself will be thankful. Find ways to play. We can be serious about our work without being serious about ourselves. Stay focused in order to be present when your customers and team members most need you. And should you feel your energy lapsing, try this surefire remedy: Find someone who needs a helping hand, a word of support, or a good ear - and make their day."

A great little motivator. Helps you realise if you keep trying to get people to lighten up and play you have the ability to change the perception of your work colleagues which changes your day. It was a reminder to me to keep bringing play and engagement with each other to work and to encourage positive experiences over the mundane day to day ones.

The concepts in this book are timeless, although it's easy to forget in a tight economy, or in my case, in a test driven educational system. Fish is filled with simple concepts focused on creating positive energy in the workplace in order to produce real results in both improved work and happy workers.
"We can choose to be serious about our work without being serious about ourselves." I unfortunately tend to be end product/goal oriented, so this book was an excellent reminder that I need to let my students know that I truly DO enjoy them, to really "be present" for them, and to "make their day!" They deserve that kind of treatment.

This book is so simple it seems impossible to be as powerful as it is, but it really does hold a powerful message. It's not the complicated things we learn that change our attitude, it's the simple, powerful words we find meaning in and that we can relate to. This book is relatable, relevant, and easy to implement with any team, family or organization.
Yes, it's a bit contrived. Yes, things don't go that smoothly in real life. But the underlying premise is still sound if you're trying to create an engaged work-force. Treat people like mindless automatons and you get what you give. Treat them like people and allow them to give input and have fun, and you end up with a better, more productive workplace for everyone. It's a good read for first-time leaders.
