Uris Uris
Adolescent angst set against the ruthless, corrupt background of corporate law. It would have been better suited to a high school.
You know that ornate froth that seems a vital accompaniment to a designer coffee but, if you really weigh it up, serves no actual purpose? This is the literary equivalent.

The author captures the culture which exists in so many big law firms - beautifully. It all revolves around the partners whose personalities are given free reign to be obnoxious without the constraints which naturally apply in other workplaces. The culture is one of an adolescent filled private secondary school with all of the usual testosterone fuelled competitive egos and aggression. Female lawyers just have to adapt and play the game. The author was spot on with the female lawyer who, despite her superior intellect, had to sleep with aging unattractive, even repulsive, partners to succeed. Some things just don't change. But the book's brilliance is found in it's humour based on very sharp powers of observation coupled with self deprecating analysis. I don't read many novels but this one made me laugh and cringe at the same time whilst evoking so many memories of my time as a female lawyer in a big law firm. I am now very keen to read more from the same author. You can't go wrong with this book.
