Lagercrantz was born in Stockholm, Sweden, the son of bank director Carl Lagercrantz and Countess Agnes Hamilton. He married Martina Ruin (born 1921), daughter of Professor Hans Ruin and Karin Sievers, in 1939. Lagercrantz is the father of actress Marika Lagercrantz and author David Lagercrantz

Having read Olof Lagercrantz’s vast some years back, I basically assumed that I knew . As it happens, THE WORLDS OF AUGUST STRINDBERG turns out to have been written by Björn Meidal, considered by many to be the foremost expert on Strindberg’s life and work.

Having read Olof Lagercrantz’s vast some years back, I basically assumed that I knew most everything a Strindberg-fan needs to know about the author-playwright. This present biography, by contrast, is designed as a coffee-table book, and appears to be aimed at a more popular audience. However, after browsing through all the photographs two or three times, I felt I should at least take a look at the accompanying text as well; and found myself to be pleasantly surprised.
