In a book titled "Ignorance", you can be sure that author Stuart Firestein clearly defines and then extolls the virtues of ignorance. Gun-control activist and Parkland student David Hogg just announced the catchy title of his new book, billed as a rallying cry for his generation: .If this sounds familiar, it should. For several decades, the slogan has served as an international pledge never to allow another Holocaust. The psychology of how the US gov't. has come to make so many catastrophically bad decisions. All the 9/11 hijackers entered legally (w/ State Dept. approved visas), so the response has been to buy guns, helicopters and speedboats w/ mounted machine guns to patrol our borders? Government agencies have used 9/11 as a means of increasing their power and budget; and politicians have used photo ops w/ these agencies and weaponry as symbolism of protecting us . . . while failing to even discuss the foreign policy that drives Islamic hatred of the US. From Vietnam, to Iraq, the Drug War, to Katrina, education and tax reform, the public has placed its trust in government to take appropriate action, but it has not. The writing is not the best and there is a lack of citation that makes some claims/points made unreliable. Always trying to look for alternate points of view, so this is good for that. Interesting and occasionally irritating views. However, the author appears to have died in 2010, so is not available for questions or challenge to his assumptions.

This is a comprehensive review of issues and problems in America right now. The author covers a wide-ranging territory of issues with a good historical perspective on how we got here. (Review the table of contents to see the large number of subjects covered). The book is written in a comfortable conversational tone that makes you wish you could talk directly with the author, maybe even debate him a bit. It was a very informative read and will help organize your thoughts about the issues. He offers many practical solutions. As the author says "Democracy is not a spectator's sport!". After reading this book, you will feel like you should get more involved to put some of these solutions in practice.
