Albert Beveridge's research and writing on Lincoln is wonderful. His writing is great. Obviously worked very hard on Lincoln. And worked very hard to polish his writing. It is a shame he did not live long enough to finish all 4 volumes.

I purchased the book to try to trace my ancestors, one of whom knew Abe's mother. I did not find the evidence I was looking for, but found the history really interesting.

Beveridge's treatment of Lincoln's pre-presidential years has been admired ever since it first appeared nearly a century ago. He was a pioneer in the topic and an industrious researcher. He is more sympathetic than I am to Lincoln's great political rival Stephen A. Douglas, but that disagreement doesn't diminish my admiration for this massive and well-documented two-volume book.
