Dare Wright (December 3, 1914 – January 25, 2001) was a Canadian–American children's author, model, and photographer. She is best known for her 1957 children's book, The Lonely Doll.

Dare Wright (December 3, 1914 – January 25, 2001) was a Canadian–American children's author, model, and photographer. Wright was born in the Thornhill section of Vaughan, Ontario, Canada, but spent her childhood in the United States, growing up in Cleveland, Ohio.

They were waiting as patiently as they knew how, for a mother duck's eggs to hatch. They visited the nest every day. One day, though, when they checked the nest, they found the mother was gone. Mr. Bear knew that something must have happened to her and she would not be back.

Dare Wright (1914-2001) was a fashion model and photographer based in New York City. The combination of mesmerizing black and white photographs and simple, eloquent text made the book an immediate success.

Dare Wright, Edith and the Duckling (Doubleday, 1981)

Yes, it's another Lonely Doll book with live animals! In this case, Edith and Little Bear find a lost duckling and decide to take care of it. The final Lonely Doll book to be published during Dare Wright's lifetime (a new book in the series is out, composed by Brook Ashley), Edith and the Duckling continued the move toward kinder, gentler Lonely Doll books, with Mr. Bear's gruffness almost entirely gone and replaced with parental concern for the duckling (the parent-grandparent transformation in action?) and Edith and Little Bear joining forces much more closely than usual here.

Another "if you like the series, you'll like this one" book. ***

This story is really neat. Edith and Little bear raise a duck. Mr. Bear tries to educate them a little so they are good parents. Little bear comes up with some great ideas on how to teach it to swim. Kids can see how ducks are born to be ducks. The end is sad though, as the duck flies away while Edith is in tears. Just a dose of reality. The lesson to let things go, I guess.

Honestly though, I was upset that Edith and Little Bear sat by the nest all day. If you do that the mother will not come back! They were essentially thieves. I could only think....that poor mother duck is probably in the bushes waiting for the doll and bear to leave. Mr Bear didn't think to say that the mother duck would not return, if they were sitting there guarding the nest. This is a better lesson kids should be taught.
