Textgrundlage ist die Ausgabe: Homer: Ilias, Odyssee. Mit Urtext, Anhang und Registern ( Tusculum-Bücher). v. Johann Heinrich Voss, Munchen: Winkler Verlag, 1976. Die Paginierung obiger Ausgabe wird in dieser Neuausgabe als Marginalie zeilengenau mitgefuhrt. Homer is a legendary ancient Greek epic poet, traditionally said to be the creator of the epic poems the "Iliad" and the "Odyssey". Homer's works form the groundwork of the Western Canon and are universally praised for their genius.

This translation, then, aims to introduce Homer's Odyssey, as far as possible without familiar distracting comparisons or personal additions, to an audience that in essence knows nothing about the poem, its antecedents, or the circumstances of its creation. As far as possible I have done nothing to remove those features-not so many as might be supposed, and fewer in the Odyssey than the Iliad-that are often alleged to militate against modern acceptance.
