The consistory of Ely claimed jurisdiction throughout the diocese, which included, until 1837, the Isle of Ely and the 'old' county of Cambridgeshire with the following exceptions: the probate jurisdiction of the archdeacon of Ely. after 1542, the former monastic enclosures of Thorney and of Ely college (effectively the Cathedral Close).
