In 1950, condensed books under the Reader's Digest name first appeared. These books, which presented abbreviated versions of popular novels, were an immediate success. Therefore, nine years later the company diversified even further when a series of phonograph record albums of music that was culturally sophisticated yet broadly popular appeared under the Reader's Digest banner. The Wallaces never had children, and therefore most of their stock in the company was willed to charities, including Macalester College
