For those of us blessed to have lived in stable society, but wish to be prepared for any contingencies, Selco has explained the realities of day to day life in a world without rule of law. Little things that are contrary to many popular beliefs offer nuances that have profound effects. One of many examples would be if someone tried to bribe a person of power with a gold coin, the "man with the gun" would likely wonder how many more you may have and take whatever is on your person

With Emdin’s strong focus on fire in Survival Secrets and Survivorman’s Secrets of Survival first episode on fire, and shelter next, there does seem to be a correlation

With Emdin’s strong focus on fire in Survival Secrets and Survivorman’s Secrets of Survival first episode on fire, and shelter next, there does seem to be a correlation. I guess we will see in the weeks ahead just how strong a correlation. sho. like Les Stroud; anybody that works with and appreciates David Holladay (a true Master Woodsman), as Les does, is automatically . in my book! The fire episode and Les’ ranking of tools for fire I take as his own (based on his skill level as he mentioned), and based on the premise and resources or lack there of in the show - not one you or I should equate to ourselves. I will leave it at that.

I looked carefully at about ten similar titles and this by far was the most thoughtful, effective and practical, and the one that was the most tested and proven in the field by professionals.

I could tell that both the subject and the reader were important to the author, and the real world examples and explanations made it easy to follow and remember. These two points, combined with the fact that the content was used successfully by Canadian Soldiers, made for one solid book. I was just amazed at it. It is filled with pure gold. But if you are just the occasional camper or hiker, do you really need it?

I should say that I started hiking a few years ago, and have moved up to between 10 and 20 hours a week, so I wanted to have good sound understanding of what to do if something goes wrong on the trail. I don't think a broken foot or leg cares if you are experienced or inexperienced. You never know what can happen, and it is always good to be prepared. I think in life we too often assume that everything will go as we expect it will, or as it always has, and so we just go with the flow. For me, I want to enjoy that idea, but I also want to be prepared for whatever happens, without going overboard. I say this because if something out of the ordinary happens and you need to practice survival skills and strategies, then it will go much better if one is prepared. And you want to know that what you are learning will actually work and work effectively so there are no costly surprises later. This book can provide that.

If you can only read one book on survival, camping or travel this year, this should be on your short list, or it should be the one you read, learn and take with you. Filled with sound strategy, vivid examples and easily followed explanations, it is written by an established expert who is also a thoughtful writer. I found that the book is really well put together and organized. It is so much more accessible than the others that are available. I highly - very highly - recommend it. It has effective proven strategies, plans and advice that can be used for many situations, not just hiking.

I recommend it to anyone who is into adventure or living life to the fullest. Fascinating and effective. It is one of the best reads that can help you give you tools to keep your head and heart about you as you work your way out of the unexpected.
