Ditto "That Chatty Gal".

The heroine, Jacklyn, is an ex-con who is innocent. Much is made of this and the bad guys like to shove her face into her sordid ex-con past. Our hero, Bart, even offers his family's very expensive lawyer to straighten this mess out. Jacklyn was an honor student on a scholarship with no previous record, bustin' her butt to drag herself out of her poverty to make something of herself, and a rich, pampered guy sets her up and sends her off to prison. This isn't the storyline but it pervades the story and ends with this still not resolved. Maybe in real life things like this don't get resolved, but that is not why I read these books. I want all the problems solved with nothing to hamper the happily ever after.

I have noticed in several other books by this author that problems that were introduced weren't resolved by the end of the book. I didn't pay much attention to that, I figured I could pretend it was ok. But this one was so glaringly not addressed, I couldn't let it go.

Please, don't introduce a fixable problem and then let it hang.

After reading the first book in the series you just can't stop!! And I love how this book ties into the series or can be a stand alone book as well.

Of the dozen or so romance novels I've read, this one was somewhat pleasant in the love story aspect of the book, but not moving. It's worth reading if you're seeking pure escapism, but don't mind that it is predictable from the first chapter onwards. There was never any of the true classic "breakup" between the couple that I've come to expect in a romance, which made me feel there was hardly a chance for real danger to cause harm. I was unhappy with the level of violence described by the psychic, the traumatic and seedy background description of the female main character's mother and home life experiences. The prison experience of the main character didn't create pity in me as much as revulsion. There was only one true love making scene, and it was awfully short and lackluster. Feelings weren't investigated very deeply in the writing. Still, I read through to see if I'd pegged the "bad guy" correctly. The quality of writing could be better, the dialog sounds mostly artificial, the reactions of the sister of the main male character seemed unbelievable near the end, the fight scenes contrived. Overall, while it was a pleasant distraction while reading, I really wish more time had gone into crafting it - making the characters more believable, better dialog, more edge of the seat moments concerning love rather than discussion of violent acts which happened to "others" in the book. I hate to leave poor reviews, but I have to be honest. :( PS: I wish the editors would have caught the many typos spelling the cook's name: Juanita vs Jaunita became annnoying quickly.

Tense and moving, TEXAS GUN SMOKE is the second romantic suspense in Joanna Wayne's Four Brothers of Colts Run Cross series for Harlequin Intrigue.

When Bart Collingsworth witnesses a car being run off the road near his family's ranch, he's pretty sure it's attempted murder. The female driver, however, insists it was just an accident but he's sure she's lying. His better judgment tells him the young beauty is big trouble while his cowboy's sense of honor compels him to help her.

Jaclyn Macgregor wishes she could trust the handsome young rancher although bitter experience has taught her rich men like him break the hearts of poor women like her. Once he finds out the truth about her past, he'll run, not walk, away anyhow. Besides, Jaclyn suspects a womanizing Louisiana politician is behind her best friend's disappearance in New Orleans and now he's out to get her. Can they find her friend and expose a ruthless killer before Jaclyn becomes the next victim?

Bart and Jaclyn are richly drawn characters whose worlds have been so very different they must overcome lifetimes of experience to trust each other and eventually fall in love. Ms. Wayne beautifully captures the strength of Bart's family who trust him in spite of overwhelming evidence that condemns Jaclyn. Whether describing ranch life, a small Texas town, New Orleans or the sleezey side of Louisiana politics, Ms Wayne's writing rings true and brings the action alive. From page one, this book will have you hooked.

One of the best Western I have read. When finished I felt that the whole story had be told, no wondering what was next.
