There are stories Americans have long told themselves about their country, stories that . In This America, a slim and pointed book, Harvard University historian Jill Lepore worries that her profession has ceased to tell the story of the American nation.

There are stories Americans have long told themselves about their country, stories that - depending on the prevailing mix of cynicism, optimism and realism - still hold sway. The shining city on a hill.

I wrote the book to encourage historical literacy and by that I also mean historical curiosity. The way we are taught in school often discourages an interest in history because there is such an emphasis on memorisation of dates and names. It doesn’t stimulate curiosity. I wrote my book with the expectation that people will use it as a springboard to stimulate their curiosity about American history. I want to encourage people to go out and experience American history, to have a first-hand look at these unique places that reflect our history and our heritage

Not all of us paid attention in high school English class, but that doesn't mean the assigned books weren't worth reading (or re-reading). And maybe it's finally time to enjoy "The Grapes of Wrath" and other classics, instead of just the CliffsNotes version. Miriam Tuliao, assistant director of central collection development at the New York Public Library, helped us create a list of 25 American classics everyone should read.

The journalist Shomari Wills’s new book, Black Fortunes, tells the story of six of those millionaires, including the landowner Robert Reed Church, born into slavery, and the self-taught scientist Annie Malone, the daughter of slaves. Below, Wills talks about how stories he heard as a child about his own family helped to inspire the book, the surprising connections he found between his subjects and more. When did you first get the idea to write this book? It’s kind of been with me since I was a kid, even though I didn’t think of it as a book back then. My great-great uncle was John Drew, one.
