Biographical Dictionary of Audiencia Ministers in the Americas.

Their ministers included oidores (civil judges), alcaldes del crimen (criminal judges), and fiscales (crown attorneys). These university-trained jurists were an important part of the body of letrados who helped to strengthen the crown through the use of law. Precisely at the time when this group was proving its utility in Castile, colonization in America was underway. As part of the effort to establish control over the new lands, Ferdinand and his successors decided to found audiencias in key colonial cities.
