Farzin Vahdat has written a trenchant analysis of the intellectual discourse of modernity in Iran. This book is an important addition to the growing body of work in Global Studies and Critical Theory as well as on contemporary Iran. Although there have been several recent studies about Iranian intellectuals, this volume is unique in that it focuses almost entirely on intellectual discourse among the clergy. Vahdat first provides us with a solid foundation for understanding the key Critical Theory concept of subjectivity - especially as expounded in the writings of Jurgen Habermas.

God and Juggernaut: Iran's Intellectual Encounter with Modernity. A few years prior to the Islamic Revolution of 1979, an Iranian professor of history assessed that too much which is published on Iranian history continues to be either shallow, narrow, cliché-littered imitations of the. not-so-great historians of the past, or are official glorifications of Iran’s present, not always consistent with the truth. The field requires a widely extended and earnest historical inquiry into the development of modern Iranian society through the exploration of its recent past.

By focusing almost entirely on intellectual discourse among the clergy, this text engages the major theoretical discourses of modernity in an attempt to address some of the central theoretical issues involved in modernity and Iran's experience of these issues.
