This is a very comprehensive book on the pop/commercial music business, with excellent information on copyright, broadcasting, and the recording industry. There is a lot of detailed information for those interested in songwriting, publishing, copyright, licensing, artist management, and recording issues. Written for those interested in music business in the US, there is also a large section on the music business outside of the US (covering topics like international copyright). I have used this book as a reference book for a music business & entrepreneurship course for students interested in classical and pop/hip-hop music careers or projects . Because this text is expensive, and my course is leaning more toward entrepreneurship in various musical genres, I didn't make it the class textbook. However, when I teach a Music Business course geared towards those interested in songwriting, publishing, and recording, I will likely use it as the course textbook.

This textbook was required for an elective course that was offered outside of my major. Although this book is written about the music business, it is actually extremely useful for business in general and the entertainment industry as a whole. This was one of the easiest and most interesting textbooks to read throughout all of my education. I learned a great deal from reading this textbook and this is one of the few required texts that I would actually recommend purchasing on your own just to further expand your knowledge.

Having taught music business classes from this book, I can say that it tells much of the story of the music biz -- not all -- but much. If there were a better book that covers the same ground or more, I'd know about it. Still, the author is friends or acquainted with people he interviewed so you can't expect that the full, unvarnished truth will be revealed; that only happens with participation or first hand knowledge relayed to you by a credible source. Until that happens, this book will do.

Fantastic book about the Music industry. This is a must for every single person who plans on working in music in some way. From the public school orchestra teacher ,to the person who works for the "Bench Pack" company, to the professional musician this book is one of the most important books in your arsenal. It can be a little "textbook-y" but it is really fantastic.

If you intend to enter this industry, this book covers all the basics and more. It's not the most up to date edition so some things may differ especially with the industry after this past year, but the book is still great to have on hand.

This book is an indepth look at the world of music. Every aspiring song writer, musician or manager/ promoter should have a copy.

It has everything you want to know about the music business.
This book is a reference book. It contains a lot of the basic information one would need to know. However it does not go into the online world that much. Nor does it address alternate copyright methods. It strictly follows the hierarchy of the recording industry.
