Description

Michael Ochs established the Michael Ochs Archives in the mid-70s.

Michael Ochs established the Michael Ochs Archives in the mid-70s. The archives currently house millions of photographs and over 100,000 albums and singles. Note that the 2014 Taschen hardcover of 1000 Record Covers does not contain pictures of 1000 record covers - the actual number of covers pictured is closer to 800. I also own the 1996 softcover copy of 1000 Record Covers - and that one does contain approx. For some reason, the 2014 hardcover eliminates the entire section of 1950's covers- nearly 160 pages containing 220 photographs.

Both a trip down memory lane and a study in the evolution of cover art, this is a sweeping look at an underappreciated art form. Michael Ochs developed an addiction to rock and roll in the early fifties. To feed his habit, Ochs headed the publicity departments of Columbia, Shelter, and ABC Records in the 60s and 70s.

1000 Record Covers book. Ochs informs us of his initial aim in life, to listen to every rock record ever released and in addition, that this book represents a very small proportion of his 100,000+ collection of albums. Although each section here is divided by decade – Ochs makes some attempt to group album covers together based on similar image or artwork (often very tenuous) with varying degrees of success and to what purpose is unclear?

Record covers are a sign of our life and times. Like the music on the discs, they address such issues as love, life, death, fashion, and rebellion. For music fans the covers are the expression of a period, of a particular time in their lives. Many are works of art and have become as famous as the music they stand for-Andy Warhol's covers, for example, including the banana he designed for The Velvet Underground.

This book has a lot of classic covers, and is beautifully put together. If you have not purchased a Taschen book before, you will really enjoy this! Quick Service

Published by Thriftbooks. com User, 11 years ago. I bought this book as a gift to my dad, an avid record collector. The book was in good condition, and arrived sooner than I anticipated. My dad and I were both very pleased, thank you! So Many Great Album Covers!

Fabulous, though I wish the page and photo size were bigger though. Also wish for a new edition with the last 20 years included! As I understand it, Taschen's new edition cuts out the 1950s and makes the book only 800-odd covers! They should do some work on the last 20 years and get it right. We can hope, anyway. Wonderful book.

Although Ochs makes his own idiosyncratic choices for what is important / beautiful / oddball for a whole generation of commercial art in support of music, 1000 means that you'll get a great sweeping look at it all. I'm personally encouraged by the emerging art attached to digital albums and am hoping for a new renaissance of art + music in the future. I saw one review here that dinged the book as containing obscene images --- that's the way the culture was and an honest attempt to survey it has to bring in some nudity and graphic in-your-face. The reviewer obviously stands so far to the right in moral values as to wear puritan clothes.

Hubby ran across this at a VRBO rented and loved it. Quickly tracked it down for Father's Day. If you are into albums - you'll like it.

Bought it thinking it would be a great collection of record covers it is… but it also isn't. Seems like the guy just threw his whole collection together in book format without any real rhyme or reason. Got it used but I'm still sending it back.

This is a great book, full of, as it says, 1000 album covers. The reproductions of the album covers are absolutely first rate, and go back to the 50s..There are sections scattered throughout the book detailing the music and culture of each decade. If you are a music freak, this is a must have.
