Betty Joseph was one of the leading Kleinian thinkers of her generation along with Wilfred Bion, Herbert Rosenfeld and Hanna Segal. She was born in Edgbaston in 1917, the daughter of an electrical engineer. Her family was from a Jewish community who had arrived in England from Alsace in the 18th century. She then moved to Manchester because there she could have a psychoanalytically based social work training and began an analysis there with Michael Balint, recently arrived from Hungary.

Betty Joseph (7 March 1917 – 4 April 2013), was a British psychoanalyst and writer, and a follower of the work of Melanie Klein. According to her obituary in The Daily Telegraph, she "was widely considered to be one of the great psychoanalysts of her day". Betty Joseph was born on 7 March 1917, at 403 Gillott Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, the daughter of Henry Joseph (1879–1941), an electrical engineer, and his wife, Nennie May Joseph, née Rudelsheim (1883–1966).

Annie Wallace is a pediatric nurse in present-day Boston unable to find true love.
