Bron and Tripathi (1969) described the aetiology as external pressure exerted on the cornea causing ridges to form in Bowman's layer as the cornea flattens. On lens removal, Bowman's layer regains its normal curvature leaving grooves where epithelial cells have been compressed above the ridges during flattening. The corneal mosaic normally disappears within 10 minutes after lenses are removed. Although not of concern in itself, a Fischer-Schweitzer mosaic appearance may indicate an excessively flat fit.
