Solution-Focused Therapy provides a framework by which a competence-based group treatment can be provided to clients who are struggling with substance abuse and dependence. Solution-Focused Group Therapy (SFGT) both preserves the underlying philosophy of competence-based approaches and can be delivered in a group format. The other primary competence-based treatment approach in the substance abuse field, Motivational Interviewing, remains an individual approach that has yet to be successfully formulated for group treatment.

I enjoyed the various aspects of SFBT as applied to the substance abuse arena. The author gives specific interventions, especially around the miracle question, with plenty of transcripted examples to show the flow of therapy with this approach. The author's approach makes note that SFBT, like any other therapy, is not 100% effective with every client you may see, it can be however a way of working with all clients as it is a way of thinking and of using language to ask appropriate questions of the client.

The author provides plenty of information on working with individuals, groups, case management and assessment, particularly in how to frame SFBT with court-ordered or other externally motivated clients who may not be pleased about showing up at your agency or practice and still staying true to the SFBT principles. Her group examples are interesting though true to SFBT roots, are devoid of any psycho-educational components which may turn off some clinicians or counselors who run a full-time program with multiple groups in a week. I could see practitioners integrating SFBT principles into their work with substance abuse clients to great effect. Very helpful addition to the field!
