The program is based on the research-supported transtheoretical model of behavior change. The manual describes skills-building activities and interventions that are likely to be most effective with clients as they cycle from the earlier stages of change/m-/precontemplation, contemplation, and preparation/m-/to the later stages, action and maintenance. Each of the structured sessions is presented in a consistent, highly accessible format, including a clear rationale, summary of objectives, and overview of the main activities that will take place. Step-by-step guidelines for implementation are provided, as well as strategies for using a motivational interviewing style. The manual is complete with all needed handouts and exercise forms, ready to photocopy and distribute to clients. Ideal for use with groups, the approach can easily be adapted to individual treatment.

As Director of a DUI counseling program for first and multiple offenders, I had been looking for a new curriculum based on the Stages of Change model to equip counselors with the latest and best tools to facilitate progress. This manual is the finest on the market and was chosen to update our program. Of particular help, are the introduction objectives, summary and implementation steps layed out to assist the counselor to focus and prepare each lesson. The initial 35 pages are especially useful to lay out the foundation of the entire process, procedures and underlying dynamics involved in assisting people to process through the various stages. I am certain this work will become normative as the primary source core material in many therapeutic programs.

I have been using this text for 10 years in developing curriculum for many different populations and tx settings. It's easily adaptable (I've combined elements of these interventions with elements the MATRIX model, private agency process groups, 12-step based process groups, groups with a variety of mandated populations), easily excerpted, and endlessly useful. I've recommended it to dozens of colleagues, many of whom have utilized it themselves, and purchased at least five different copies for my personal use. I'm using it again to develop yet another group format, this time in combination with the "Seeking Safety" model. Highly reccomended.

We just started a group for homeless individuals struggling with substance abuse. This book serves as a terrific guide for that group. The individuals in the group like the stages of change concept and the idea that where they are in terms of their particular stage of change is okay. The book itself provides the format for all groups. We have adapted it as needed for our population. So far the group is a real success. I highly recommend this book.

This text was very limited and basic. With a little thought, many clinicians could constrict their own strategies with much more substance. There is very little novel or inspiring content, which is what I was hoping for. The structure is quite repetitive and while there are two 14 week modules, most groups would work through the topics in much less time than recommended, or risk participants losing interest and dropping out.

Having met the author here in Houston, I have been impressed with her knowledge and contributions to Motivational Interviewing. She is a great speaker, and teacher. This manual is a great tool for utilizing MI in a group setting, complete with step by step group outlines and handouts to provide to patients. If you are looking for a tool to use with evidenced based practice for substance abuse, this manual is a "must have".

I work in a 30 day IOP and I love the technique of Motivational Interviewing. 1/3 of this guide has enough information for me get my clients through treatment but most ideas are too simple and I find that most clients are already in the Action phase and are ready to address more advanced problems. This guide would be excellent for working with less experienced populations.

This book was purchased to aid and assit in group sessions and to provide new creativity to use for roll play.
For group work it does ok on certan activities. I do like the assignments I do use out of it though.
