Don't expect an in-depth treatment of any one species, but it's a great starter book for learning the basics about a wide variety of domestic animals.

We had to use this for a vet assistant class. I taught biology for 17 years and much of the information is inaccurate, other info is just plain wrong. Not only that, he gives the same information in up to three places in a chapter and each time the information is not the same. (does this animal mature in 5,6, or 7 weeks???). The pictures don't match the call outs in the text, illustrate the wrong thing, or show something exactly opposite of what it says. I wrote a textbook for Prentice-Hall and I can tell you that this book was written and sent in. It was never proofed or checked by the editor (who should be fired). Several times the same word (Order, species, etc.) is spelled several ways in as many paragraphs and/or picture captions.
The workbook is crap. It had to be put together by someone who did it just so there would be one. (Not really so called).. crosswords are poorly computer generated.
The CD containing review and games is poorly thought out and difficult to use. The same questions are used in each game and could be worth different points in the same game. Watch out if you put an 's' on the end of a word or type '5' instead of 'five'.
This book is junk. It has to be totally rewritten and it has to be edited by a professional... or just plain edited.
SAVE YOUR MONEY..

This is not the most exciting textbook, but it is a nice overview of most common pet species. This new edition (3) has a chapter on hedgehogs and one on sugar gliders. The photos and writing style are a bit dry, but if your high school (or possibly middle school) student has interest in the veterinary field, they'd still love this text! As other reviewers have said, much of the material is relatively common knowledge. However, I'd add that it is a well organized and thorough treatment of the information.

And, it's not all common knowledge - I did learn that baby hedgehogs are called hoglets!
