Labour of Love: The Invention of Dating. In the 1950s many were appalled that young people were going steady when they should have been dutifully shopping around. Yet a shortage of American men after the second world war made it wiser for women to get cosy with one instead of playing the field.

McMath's book on Populism at the turn of the 20th century is good enough in that it covers the basics.

It is a complex story involving a variety of agrarian and labor organizations, though dominated by the National Farmers' Alliance with its beginnings in western Texas in 1878 and to some extent the Knights of Labor, ranging from the far West, through the Plains and the Midwest, and through the entire southern belt. Lamentably for McMath, whose sympathies lie unabashedly with the populists about whom he writes, by the 1890s the populist al party inevitably ran "headlong in to the sobering realities of American politics. McMath's book on Populism at the turn of the 20th century is good enough in that it covers the basics.

Meanwhile a school of cultural nationalists had propounded a populist view of Australia's past and the Marxism of the day had won converts amongst young intellectuals. The latter were the founders of the Australian Society for the Study of Labour History and its journal Labour History in 1961. The substantial output of labour history dates from this time, the extension of higher education providing its writers and readers. Thus labour history became a significant part of Australian history, which had hitherto been neglected.

Australian Labor Party, one of the major Australian political parties. The first majority federal Australian Labor Party government was established in 1910. In 1993 Keating led the party to a fifth consecutive electoral victory, but the party’s 13 years in office ended in 1996 with the victory by the Liberal Party under John Howard. It was 11 years before Labor regained power.
