For those already conscious of the vital role an armed citizenry plays in a free society, parts of Farnam's book may at first seem like "preaching to the choir". However, the issues Farnam addresses are all necessary in the context of dealing responsibly and completely with the subject of using a handgun for defensive purposes. For example, Farnam spends many pages talking about the mental frame of mind necessary to effectively use firearms under stressful circumstances, as well as the legal aspects of doing so. For some this has apparently led them to conclude that Farnam is paranoid or otherwise overly cynical of law enforcement and government. That is simply not the case. Besides being a member of law enforcement himself, Farnam's views are based in real world circumstances, and his advice, should a person unwisely ignore it, would very likely prove detrimental both physically and legally.

If you're looking for practical, reliable, accurate, responsible, effective, easy to understand, solid instruction on the use of handguns, you've found it. The material is presented very well and Farnam does a fantastic job of explaining the subject and covers all the major areas of tactical handgun use, from proper stance and grip to firearm and ammo selection to safe handling and storage, and even includes a small section on first-aid for gunshot wounds.

I think what separates Farnam's book from others in the same genre has to do with two things:

First, he gives a pretty complete picture. He doesn't hit every aspect of handgun ownership of course, but regarding the essential nuts and bolts of defensive handgun use he does a really fine job of putting things together into a nice neat comprehensible package. As some other reviewers have said, if this were your only book on the subject you'd have a really strong foundation.

Second, Farnam's instruction has an underlying tone that goes deeper than simply "point and shoot". It certainly isn't a philosophy book, and moreover doesn't treat the subject with the depth or ruggedness of Jeff Cooper, but on the off chance somebody reads his book as an "outsider" to gun culture and/or considers firearms unnecessary, somehow inherently evil or otherwise too dangerous for "normal" people to have and use, as well as perceives the people who do as "abnormal", "extreme", "right-wing", etc. and yet still considers themselves logical and open to reason - for those people Farnam gives some food for thought.

For example, as he admirably puts it, referencing the Second Amendment, "In a free society the Militia is composed of every able-bodied citizen who is capable of owning and bearing military arms in voluntary associations, independent of government. The Militia is not to be confused with the National Guard or other government-controlled military organizations." The Militia's central purpose was and is, "...by virtue of their individually armed presence, to dissuade would-be dictators and other tyrants from imposing slavery upon the people."

The above is one of the primary reasons to support firearms ownership; it is also one of the main reasons to buy Defensive Handgunning. Although the book isn't the end-all-be-all on the subject (for example, specific methods of carry, firearms maintenance, etc. aren't covered), to be fair it doesn't claim to be, and within its scope the book is very difficult to beat. There are a lot of really good books on the subject, but Farnam covers the basics with almost no "fluff", and does so in relatively few words with a method that is accessible and achievable by any average person. That's the primary reason I chose to review this book in particular and why I recommend it highly.

This book covers a wide range of topics and contains a huge amount of information. If you are only going to buy one book on the defensive use of a handgun, this would probably be my recommendation.

Farnam covers many areas that rarely appear in similar books, i.e. first aid for gunshot victims and interacting with Law Enforcement Officers. Many of the chapters are very interesting and Farnam's writing style is easy to read. In my opinion, the book would be much better if it were organized differently. Some of the technical data and definitions could have been moved to an index in the back. There are several chapters that are difficult to read and go into excessive detail.

Overall a worthwhile book to read and an even better reference to keep on your bookshelf. I can easily see myself going back to this book in the future and reading selected chapters (i.e. Trigger Control) when my memory needs to a refresher.

If I could give six stars, I would. By far the best Defensive Handgun book I own, and I own a Bunch, over 86 at last count some going back to the turn of the Century. Everything printed after 1980 is the same old regurgitated stuff. This book covers so many areas. You would need to buy a dozen newer books on different topics to get everything in this one. I am currently a LEO and a multi disciplined Firearms Instructor . Add this book to your collection.

John Farnam is a legend. For the initiated, he is the undisputed master in the art of defensive handgunning and rifle. Whether you have had the privilege of being run through the ringer of one of his grueling courses or are simply ready to learn real world techniques and disciplines that will save your life in a gun fight, this book is a must have for your library.

Read it and gain insight into one of America's great minds. Farnam is one part warrior and one part philosopher with a dash of battlefield poet.

Indispensable.

I'm over three forths through the book and if has a lot of good information for the general homeowner /ccw holder that can make you a more educated operator. I've handled guns my entire life and John's books are excellent. They have taught me many things about firearms that I didn't know. Things like "in register" and the different modes and handling types with firearms. In the eyes of your buddies, you will be more knowlegable and will command respect. I also have his other book on shotgun and rifle handling and I love it. That's why I bought this book to compliment it. For the responsible gun handling citizen, I highly recommend this book and other's from John Farnam!

A great reference work! A "soup-to-nuts" treatment.

John Farnam has years of experience in law enforcement use of firearms, and this book shows it! Want a book that can serve as a tutorial AND as a subsequent reference book? Farnam is your author! Almost completely devoid of empty fluff, Farnam covers everything, sometimes even to the point of repetition. You will use this book both for self education and as a nearly encyclopedic reference for years to come.
