This book takes us to the far corners of the heart and mind as well as the ocean's realm. The scale is grand, the adventure is high, and the background of the Sea of Cortez is spectacular as it must have been in those early days.

They guide him to a masquerade ball, to a dangerous secret club, and finally through a magical doorway created by the fierce and mysterious Mirabel.

When Zachary Rawlins stumbles across a strange book hidden in his university library it leads him on a quest unlike any other. Its pages entrance him with their tales of lovelorn prisoners, lost cities and nameless acolytes, but they also contain something impossible: a recollection from his own childhood. They guide him to a masquerade ball, to a dangerous secret club, and finally through a magical doorway created by the fierce and mysterious Mirabel. This door leads to a subterranean labyrinth filled with stories, hidden far beneath the surface of the earth.

Carlos Eyles became deeply connected to the ocean world as a child growing up in Hawaii

Carlos Eyles became deeply connected to the ocean world as a child growing up in Hawaii. His life, first as a free diving big game spearfisherman and now as an underwater photographer, has covered much of the planet's oceans and seas - a lifetime journey, which has paralleled the decline of the ocean's great wealth. He has written eight books and countless articles about his experiences. He recently returned to Hawaii to live and teach free diving.

If you love the ocean and especially if you've taken food from it to any extent, these short stories are fantastic! I heard Carlos speak at a book/photo promo and the guy is a true artist and ocean lover.

A very interesting collection of stories and personal experiences from someone who is very accomplished as a diver, writer, and underwater photographer, and clearly has a deep love of the ocean.
Stories range from dramatic to fantastic to disturbing (particularly in light of what we are doing to the oceans).
All-in-all, it increased my passion for the ocean, and desire to spend more time in it.
