I would very much like to see Irfan Habib write an objective examination of Gandi's true history, politics, conduct. It's not a pretty story.

Habib's book contains interesting chapters on "Marx's Perception of India," "The Social Distribution of Landed Property in Pre-British India: A Historical Survey," "The Peasant in Indian History," "Caste in Indian History," "Colonization of the Indian Economy 1757-1900," and so on. At times Habib's method is mechanistic and deterministic, as is inevitable given his stalinist miseducation, and unfamiliarity with Marxist method  .
