Human Resource Development (HRD) function is one of the most critical support function in an organization. The article looks at the theoretical aspects of the HRD function. Finally, the theory of HRD also morphed with the times and in recent years, there has been a perceptible shift in the way the HRD function has come to encompass the gamut of activities ranging from routine tasks like hiring and training and payroll to actually being the function that plays a critical and crucial role in the employee development It is the practice in many organizations to conduct training programs periodically for their employees.

It presents a wide variety of HR theories and practices, but it is limited in how well it actually explains the concepts. It seems to jump around a lot and does not give clear definitions of a lot of terms. There is no denying that this book has everything the aspiring human resource manager or theorist needs to know but it is presented in such a style as to be at times virtually unreadable. Admittedly this is a complex subject but it can be expressed in much clearer terms and indeed has been by other author's on this subject such as Marchington.
