Not a good book if you want real good info to become a Property Manager. More of a genralized overview of the job.

As the title may suggest, this book provides a basic overview of careers related to commercial and residential property management in the United States and Canada, including: on-site manager, leasing broker, property manager, and portfolio manager. A few anecdotal quotes are included from property managers who explain their career paths. Some trade association surveys and Bureau of Labor Statistics data are cited.

The context is mostly rental properties; there is one page about Homeowners Associations.

The author is a communications manager with the National Association of Realtors and was previously editor of the Journal of Property Management for 20 years. She has experience writing about real estate, but she has no personal experience to share as a property manager.

The book is well written and can be read quickly, although there is one style point I find annoying. Several times the author refers to "an REIT." REIT, an acronym which stands for Real Estate Investment Trust, is pronounced "reet" so it would be grammatically proper to say "a REIT."

I was looking for a book that would help bridge the gap between real estate sales and apartment leasing/property management. This book was not it.
It was full of too many broad generalizations and had no specific day to day instructional information. I guess I was expecting more of a text book style reference material than this general discussion of the industry.
Show me leasing and accounting software examples. Discuss issues of maintenance and courses of action. Brainstorm on marketing property and filling leasing quotas. None of that here. Good thing it didn't cost much, cause it wasn't worth much.

I really expected more out of this book, it was a disappointment. If you have no idea about property management then this book is probably good. If you are already in the business, it's probably not all that helpful. I expected more details and this was an overview.

The book totally met my expectations. I recommend this book to anyone considering a career change to the property management field. The author did an excellant job explaining what it takes to be a property manager/portfolio manager/supervisor/leasing agent/broker and how much each makes along with job descriptions of each job title.

this book was very good it explained the fundamentals of how to get started in the field of real estate. it went in depth on how the system works and how to make money in real estate. it provided a good look at where real estate is today and where it will be in the future.
