We are doing internal training of many of our staff to facilitate meetings. We wanted a simple, but substantive, text to give staff as a supplemental reference for this topic - and this was certainly the best book for that purpose. The book covers all the important aspects of how to facilitate meetings. It does it in a straightforward manner, presenting the material with no fluff, and using simple language that everyone can understand and relate to. Each chapter ends with tips and short checklists to put the materials into a perspective and suggest how the information can be put to use.

So, why rate this a 4 instead of 5? My only "dislike" about the book is its chapter on "Delegate." It's not that the chapter itself is bad or inaccurate. It's just that I don't believe delegation is a topic of facilitation. Some people tend to think that facilitating a meeting is the same as managing (facilitating) a work group. I don't. This book is very valuable for learning how to facilitate a meeting; and insofar as you facilitate meetings as part of managing work groups, then it is useful in that way to managers too. But delegation is a management topic, and in a book focused on facilitation it's really out of place, in my opinion. Still, this is a minor concern and, for our purposes, we are quite pleased to be ordering copies of this text for our staff.

This book is a great toolbox for anyone managing or leading groups or teams. It is not about getting up and presenting to a group. It is more about getting up and tapping into a group's creativity, ideas, and expertise and helps to solve problems, execute tasks, or implement solutions. Just because you're leading a group discussion doesn't mean you're automatically the designated leader. I was put into a temporary project team where we were required to solve a major problem. For many of the individuals it was the first time we had met. Putting this information to use definitely helped us arrive at our solution more quickly.
