• Optimizing the “people” components of IT service delivery, from customer service to executive support

• Using technology to manage systems more efficiently and effectively

• Systematically managing performance, availability, and business continuity

• Reducing the cost and complexity of IT facilities management

• Taking a more strategic approach to security

I am an IT professional who likes to have a book to read and refer to. This is much more of a classroom book for college that for someone in the workplace. However, if you are a new IT manager and are looking for a reference to compare what you are doing to this would work well. It might even give you ideas for things you aren't doing.

The book presents the interesting topics for IT systems management, but it does not really give in-depth knowledge for IT specialists. Also, many details in the book are just about old and obsolete technologies. Good to read for general information and curiosity of IT fundamental, not for real work. Hope its next editon will be much better.

If I had to guess, I would say the author either stopped working in the IT field or wrote the book in the mid to late 90s. Most of his "real world" examples revolve around legacy systems. It's not that we don't still have a few IBM mid-range systems within our infrastructure, but a lot has changed in IT infrastructure since 2000. High availability & business continuity have taken on a whole new meaning thanks to server virtualization, storage deduplication, increased connection speeds between data centers, and cloud computing concepts. While I think many of the concepts are still valid, I would not rely on this as your playbook to IT systems management. While I agree that you must implement some structure and discipline, with all the today's threats on IT I feel your infrastructure must be more responsive and adaptive to change.

I would not recommend this book unless you are an IBM iSeries administrator born before 1965.
Recognizing data as a corporate asset and defining metrics around the availability, integrity and confidentiality of those assets is an integral part of an organization's Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) strategy. Technology solutions may support the availability and protection of data, but the lack of measurable processes and procedures for the collection, management and sharing of that information may be the biggest risk of a breach or unauthorized access to that data.

While IT Systems Management provides timeless information on identifying business requirements and system design and management considerations, the book is an invaluable resource to understanding and addressing compliance and security risks/requirements associated with people, processes and technology.
