Fashion in the period 1500–1550 in Western Europe is marked by voluminous clothing . Kybalová, et a. Pictorial Encyclopedia of Fashion. Fink, August (1963).

Fashion in the period 1500–1550 in Western Europe is marked by voluminous clothing worn in an abundance of layers (one reaction to the cooling temperatures of the Little Ice Age, especially in Northern Europe and the British Isles). Contrasting fabrics, slashes, embroidery, applied trims, and other forms of surface ornamentation became prominent. Bronzino's Young Man with a Book wears a dark slashed doublet with a standing collar and matching hose. His shirt has a small ruffle at the neck, and his hat is decorated with pairs of metal tags or aiglettes.

Did people really dress like this? Illustrations, paintings, drawings. Sadly, this is all we have for 99.9% of all fashion ever created. We have to trust or believe the author that some people actually dressed that way. We must also be aware that the book is not world fashion as the ambitious title indicates, but should have been titled Elite European Fashions through the Ages. Clothes worn by the ruling elite. And note, these were all bespoke, custom made, hand tailored for the customer. Not one off-the-rack ensemble is shown on these hundreds of pages.
