Good book but buy the second edition, even if it's $40 or $50 more. The new edition has been rewritten and has noticeably more color pictures throughout. Color is no longer frivolous: it's essential.

Since this was a book on art and sculpture I was expecting it to be in color. There were nearly 500 pages but only 10-15 were in color while the rest were black/white

Like another reviewer I purchased this book for a college class. I found the book to be well laid out, generously illustrated and generally user friendly, especially for someone with a basic grounding in art history.
Like most textbook and art history tomes it tends to be VERY dry, but for good information, an excellent set of notes and a well stocked bibliography, it was exceptionally useful.
