At fifteen, Turner was already exhibiting View of Lambeth. He soon acquired the reputation of an immensely clever watercolourist. A disciple of Girtin and Cozens, he showed in his choice and presentation of theme a picturesque imagination which seemed to mark him out for a brilliant career as an illustrator.

Joseph Mallord William Turner RA (23 April 1775 – 19 December 1851), known contemporarily as William Turner, was an English Romantic painter, printmaker and watercolourist. He is known for his expressive colourisations, imaginative landscapes and turbulent, often violent marine paintings. Turner was born in Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, London, to a modest lower-middle-class family. He lived in London all his life, retaining his Cockney accent and assiduously avoiding the trappings of success and fame.

This book provides a mass of information on the historical and artistic influences on Turner. To fit his work into the larger framework of his art and life, a list of the works discussed appears alongside a brief biographical chronology at the end of the book. The author has also written "Turner's Picturesque Views in England and Wales", which won the "Yorkshire Post" Art Book Award, and "Turner's Rivers, Harbours and Coasts".
