Rien Poortvliet (Dutch pronunciation: ; 7 August 1932 – 15 September 1995) was a Dutch draughtsman and painter. Born in Schiedam, he was best known for his drawings of animals and for "Gnomes" in the famous series of books provided with text by Wil Huygen and published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc. of New York City. Being a plasterer's son from Schiedam, making a living as an artist did not seem an option for Rien Poortvliet.

Similiar to most of Rien Poortvliet's other illustrated books, this book is about Noah's Ark and the wonder of God's creation.

This book opened the world of Rien Poortvliet's art to me. I am still opening up this one work to find the inspiration and the beauty that he painted with. The softness of earthy tones and the subject matter brings one into a world that steers away from drastic colors, harsh tones, and photo finish works. Rather it shows the mood of the open fields of a farms and woodlands that are now day far gone both here in America and world wide. The reality of the animals and their environment pulls no punches as it can show the fox with his meal and the rabbits running past cows in the pasture. Far from barbaric but not a Disney view of wild life either.
The religious narration keeps within the boundaries of the Biblical account of the flood found in Genesis , with an insider 's questions and views on "how it was accomplished". Very interesting format and I think all will find it helpful in putting this event into a perspective. Young or old will , I believe, love the art work and the story presentation pleasing. I strongly recommend it to everyone who has an interest in the Flood and also art work of nature. Also, has a portion of this book shown on its web site.
