Alphonse Maria Mucha was born in the town of Ivančice, Moravia (currently a region of the Czech Republic). In 1871, Mucha became a chorister at the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, Brno, where he received his secondary school education. Mucha produced a flurry of paintings, posters, advertisements, and book illustrations, as well as designs for jewelry, carpets, wallpaper, and theatre sets in what was termed initially The Mucha Style but became known as Art Nouveau (French for "new art"). Mucha's works frequently featured beautiful young women in flowing, vaguely robes, often surrounded by lush flowers which sometimes formed halos behind their heads.

Alphonse (Alfons) Mucha (1860 – 1939) was a Czech painter and decorative artist born in 1860 born in the town of Ivančice, Moravia. He is best known for his luxurious poster and product designs, which encapsulate the Art Nouveau style. Contemporary interest in his work was revived in 1980 after an exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris. This is part 10 of a 12-part series on the works of Alphonse Mucha: The Slave Epic After spending many years in Paris and America, Mucha returned to Prague in 1910 with the Slav Epic project as his driving ambition.

Alphonse Mucha (Czech, 1860-1939) virtually invented Art Nouveau as it applied to graphic design. Hired by happenstance to design a poster for one of Sarah Bernhardt's theatrical productions, he finished it in just a few days.

The profoundly innovative poster earned its creator instant fame. Before the poster, Mucha had been a capable illustrator and painter who kept his 'real' art safely in the Academic mode. After the poster, he worked prolifically in his new style, producing hundreds of images--such as these twelve gorgeous examples of 'le style Mucha.'
