The examples in the book are written out in musical notation as well as TAB, so if your musical journey doesn't require you to learn to sightread music, you wont get bogged down. The CD also provides good examples from the book to practice with.

If you are one of those people who prefer to teach themselves from books, this is a good starting point. It doesn't go into as much detail as some other books, but to start out learning the bass guitar, you'd do well to pick this up.

Just what I expected

I purchased this book after checking out a copy from my public library. The text really provides a great deal of information in a format the is interesting, whether one has no musical background or an extensive one. The exercises are fun to play and really build skills. The CD provides additional opportunities for those learn better with their ears than their eyes.

The book had too many words, no tab, not enough music lyrics

Nice easy going content with lots of examples.

Avoid the Kindle edition at all costs. It does not includes the audio tracks (when I have an audio capable device) and the music sheet and tabs are included as images (which makes them useless).

The one star review is only because of this crappy edition, it has nothing to do with the content on the book.

Being new to the bass guitar, but having played the guitar for many years, I felt I needed something to give me some ideas and get my basics right. Many of the "Everything" guides offer excellent, comprehensive introductions to their area and contain a lot of useful, practical information, and this one is no exception, covering a wide range of bass techniques and tips. Ultimately, however, the book was a little disappointing to me. If you have a good sense of music, and especially of how you think bass should sound in a band setting, even if you have limited experience actually playing the bass, then this guide is probably too basic for you. Some of the material comes across as too theoretical and not sufficiently involved with making actual music in a band setting. However, if you are an absolute beginner, with no experience playing in a band (any instrument), someone who does no play the guitar from before, and with little experience reading music, this is a solid introduction to the area. Overall, it's a pretty good guide to bass playing.
