Wax Poetics Anthology, Volume 1, the first book from the esteemed music journal showcasing everyone from jazz .

Wax Poetics is a quarterly American music magazine dedicated to vintage and contemporary jazz, funk, soul, Latin, hip-hop, reggae, blues, and R&B in the crate-digger tradition.

Wax Poetics is a quarterly American music magazine dedicated to vintage and contemporary jazz, funk, soul, Latin, hip-hop, reggae, blues, and R&B in the crate-digger tradition; the name of the magazine is itself an allusion to vinyl records. Since the first issue of Wax Poetics was published in December 2001, the magazine has expanded its operations to include apparel sales, a record label, and book publishing imprint. In November 2008, Wax Poetics, Inc. unveiled Wax Poetics Japan.

When Wax Poetics debuted in 2001, many magazines were covering the artists of the day, but coverage on classic material was noticeably lacking. This second volume of Wax Poetics Anthology continues in the magazine’s tradition of bridging the gap.

Throughout Wax Poetics there is the sense that hip-hop was built on secret, sacred knowledge. I'm glad that people like what I do, but I'd like to get paid," Marva Whitney is quoted as saying in an interview in Wax Poetics Anthology: Volume 1, a sharp-looking, hardcover collection of articles from the first five issues of Wax Poetics magazine, the self-proclaimed "crate-digger's bible".

Wax Poetics Journal is back for 2020 with Digable Planets c/o . Paperback and hardcover. New Wax Poetics reissues.

“The fandom driving the magazine is infectious, and the best pieces are simply essential.... A large part of Anthology’s draw, as with Wax Poetics the magazine, is how gorgeous it looks: Many pieces come with lovingly reproduced album covers and 45 labels, arrayed neatly like so much recordcollector porn.” —The Onion A.V. Club Wax Poetics Anthology, Volume 1, the first book from the esteemed music journal showcasing everyone from jazz and Hip Hop heavyweights to soul and funk musicians, gathers articles from their first five issues into an attractive hardbound edition filled with vintage photos and album art. Including profiles of the Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA, funk drummers Clyde Stubblefield and John “Jab’O” Starks, Wild Style director Charlie Ahearn, the late jazz bassist and composer Charles Mingus, and many more, this first installment of the Wax Poetics Anthology is a must-have for record collectors and music connoisseurs alike. First published in December 2001, Brooklyn-born Wax Poetics hit newsstands with a new vision for music journalism, creating a bridge between the past and present of Hip Hop, jazz, funk, soul, reggae, disco, and Latin music. Although originally created for a concentrated market of music aficionados, the magazine’s audience has grown exponentially, making musical anthropologists out of average music listeners and spawning a soul renaissance, complete with comeback tours and sophomore efforts. Wax Poetics illuminates the dark corners of our sonic past, while also striving to give new and innovative artists the credit they truly deserve.

I picked this up a few weeks ago, and have to say I've been floored by the content. I've been a subscriber to the terrific WP magazine for only about a year now, and this Anthology helped me to catch up with some of what I'd missed. It starts with amazing interviews with the biggest named in Funk/Soul/Jazz drumming--the men who's drumming has built the core of the sampling culture that followed their generations work. Further articles delve into Hip-hop and Dub Reggae. Since all this may inspire you to increase your own collection of delicious vinyl, they even have a DIY article on building record shelves.

Essential reading for lovers of old-school Hip-hop, Funky Jazz, Funk, or music in general.

I bought this book because I love the magazine. Unfortunately, I never could bring myself to read it because the print is microscopic. As much as I like the content, writing, and photography, I can't rate it higher. The hardcover looks great, pictures are beautiful, but ill just stick to the magazines from now on.

Un libro que responde al espiritu de la revista, impulsando esa visión de la música que no se termina en el marketing, sino comprendiendola como un fenomeno sociologico complejo.
