It's a compilation of a four book guitar course, The Complete Guitar Player. The good part is you get all of the songs, the bad part is you don't get the instruction and it is slightly confusing to go through, but not that bad. There are a lot of good songs in here, James Taylor, John Denver, Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens, etc. They are very simply written, one page each, in music notation only. There is a section in the back with a few TAB songs and exercises.

The best part is the chords are listed for each song and there is a suggested strumming or fingerpicking pattern for that song. That comes from the lesson part of the book. I have books on strumming and fingerstyle instruction and have been practicing those. This gives me the opportunity to apply the author's pattern or one of my own to the songs. I find myself picking this book up more and more because it has some of my favorite songs and because I can work on my fingerstyle skills.

This is a great book for guitar teachers. It has lots of popular folk and other songs for all ages. It is becoming
dated to some extent but the newer version isn't as good. Kids and adults love the book.

While it has chord diagrams, I generally write them out much bigger and over time replace the simple open chords
with more advanced chord structures.

Now the bizarre thing. It's supposed to be a merger of several books. But the table of contents is completely
wrong. The songs are not anywhere near where they are marked. I have my students put yellow stickems on their
songs. Probably I should just have them write the page number of the song they learn.

I take off a point for the useless table of contents.

This book has songs by the Beatles, Cat Stevens, James Taylor, Paul Simon, John Denver, the Eagles, Buddy Holly. I bought a guitar and with a couple of strumming sessions with my cousin (also an amateur) I taught myself (sort of, I'm still working on it!) by playing the songs in this book. They are written in box tablature, which I think all books should be -- it's just a simple visual notation that makes learning easy. It also includes strumming suggestions, but since you'll know most of the songs in this book, you have a good idea how they should sound. Also, each song is on a single page, perhaps this is because of simplified song notation, but it saves the interuptions for page turning. The only drawback is the few songs of the authors that are included. Perhaps they are good songs, but since I've never heard them, it would be difficult for me to figure them out! That is easily overlooked with this wonderful collection of songs -- Happy strumming!

I've found lots of good songs in this book I had never played before. I especially like that it has some strumming pattern suggestions. Most books I have don't include that. This has lots of 70's music to keep you supplied with material (Cat Stevens, Gordon Lightfoot, Billy Joel, many others). Difficulty range is mostly beginner to intermediate. Arrangements are for solo guitar + vocals with mostly common chords and a few less common ones here and there.

I think this is a compilation of all the songs from four guitar lesson books from Russ Shipton. The lessons are not included - just the songs.

Generally a good book as far as content goes but absolutely horribly organized. Specifically there is no consolidated listed of the all the songs in either a table of contents or index. Marking the table of contents of each of the included 4 books is an option. Some of the songs as listed need a bit of modification to be sung as remembered.

I read some of the other reviews on this book and bought it anyway. I was pleasantly surprised at the number of old favorites I found in its pages. Yes there are a lot of songs and arrangements by the author, and that is bad why? I would recommend this book for the aspiring player trying to expand his repertoire. Many of these are arranged so that the whole song is on a single page which is a huge improvement while learning.

This book has been very helpful for a beginning guitar player like myself. It has very basic chords and songs that I love. I bought the book with the ring binder which enables me to make a copy more easily on the copier of the song that I'm learning and then I don't have to carry the entire book to my lessons. The book would have been perfect if all of the lyrics would have been written under the music scores vs at the bottom of the page.
I am 71 years old and learning to play the guitar was on my "bucket list"..... Since I have had no professional training and what I am learning is from "you tube", "books", etc., this book has a lot of songs I like and are easy to play! I am sure you will not be disappointed when you purchase it!!!
