To its millions of fans, country music is America's music, offering a window on the sweet dreams and cruel disappointments of ordinary American lives. Now the renowned Country Music Foundation, custodian of Nashville's legendary Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, has compiled a fascinating and infinitely useful guide to this beloved musical genre--The Encyclopedia of Country Music. Nearly 1,300 complete and up-to-the-minute alphabetical entries put eight decades of country music at readers' fingertips, from the earliest '20s recordings of the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers to the '90s chart-topping albums of LeAnn Rimes and Garth Brooks. A distinguished field of 137 contributors provides an eminently readable and reliable guide to the singers, songwriters, record companies, and industry movers and shakers who have made country music the increasingly popular--and profitable--juggernaut it is today. There are entries for influential radio and television programs, and for key country landmarks from Nashville's Music Row to Bakersfield's Blackboard nightclub. Ten longer essays probe the historical, cultural, religious, artistic, and financial forces shaping country music. Hundreds of photographs, some never before published, accompany the text, including 75 color photographs from the CMF Library's record collection, surveying the history of the country music album cover. Twelve appendices provide lists of country's all-time best-selling albums, country music stations nationwide, all the country music awards won over the years, and much more. Authoritative, accessible, and unerringly accurate, The Encyclopedia of Country Music will delight fans. It is an essential reference for libraries, radio stations, and the entertainment industry.

I absolutely love this book. I'm finding out all sorts of stuff I didn't know. I recently toured the Country Music Hall of Fame Museum in Nashville and I loved that, too. Only there was so much to see that it's hard to remember everything. Here is a reference to it all and more.

"Book is informative, but not comprehensive. Many people are simply not mentioned. For example, Tanya Tucker is listed, but her equally talented sister, La Costa, is not. Even on Tanya's page, her sister isn't mentioned. Likewise, Tompall & the Glaser Brothers are included, but Jim Glaser (as a solo artist) is overlooked. Other discrepancies, but it is still informative."

When the word "Enclyclopedia" is used for Kingsbury's title, it is very accurate. It is super-detailed, well-written, and worth the price. If there is only one sourcebook for country music fans, this one is it. The only drawback is that the material does not reach past around 1997 - so, if one is looking for, let's say, the Peasall Sisters, they won't be found until there's at least a 2002-2005 update. Other than that, it's supergreat source material for classic (truly and not instant-classic) country.

I think this volume does a very good job of hitting on all of the major (and some minor) stars, in addition to many writers, producers and other contributors to the field of country music. The articles are concise, well written and often illuminating. And the photographs help, though some artists' photos are not included. The downside is that many articles concentrate on certain segments or time periods of the artists, while almost ignoring other years of their performing lives. And as would be expected in a work of this sort, some artists are not included at all. Over all, I would recommend this work to any fan of country and folk music. Pop fans may also enjoy it, since it does include many crossover artists. Nice job. Wonder if an updated version is in the works?

The Enclyclopedia of Country Music was a gift for my husband. He says this book is very informative and contains detailed biographical information on country western singers/performers as well as many individuals associated with/involved in the production/playing of country western music. He enjoys this book tremendously and spends many moments/hours via phone discussing details contained in this book with his brother. One of the best gift selections for him I have made.

The description made this book sound much better than it is. I really thought for the Kindle edition it would be organized so you could search the book by artist or year or whatever. It really needs something either in the Table or Contents or in an index where you can click on an artist name and go right to the information on that person. I got the impression from the other reviews that there were small sections for each artist - there are not.

Wish I would not have bought this book now - not worth it. Perhaps worth it as a freebie.
