The Burlesque Handbook - Jo Weldon. I listened to them with delight, loving their stories of diamonds and minks and martinis, even when they insulted us for our spandex and cocaine. In my pragmatic way I understood that my job was essentially a service and sales job, albeit one that allowed for a certain kind of self-expression, and I studied books on maximizing sales as well as studying dance and the quotes of Mae West and Isadora Duncan. Working in strip joints was high in drama but lacking in theater.

It's a cute book, I bought it used. It has a nuch diy how to's (pasties, tassels, choreography, fans, etc) , but for things that don't have how to's google searches always help. The majority of the book is narratives that then goes into how it applies to you and a bunch of tips and guidelines. There's a lot of inspiration, and exercises, and I would suggest buying it used because I find it to be worth those prices. While Google is great (and I know I use it for everything lol), there's sound advice in here that made it worth buying.
Honestly, his book is not just useful for burlesque. It can be applied to (in my experience) general onstage acting, cosplaying, and overall confidence and identity.

An excellent book and great companion to Jo's live classes. I wish I had gotten the physical copy rather than the kindle one (not knocking any stars though) because the pastie templates are not user friendly in that format, plus now I can't get my book signed.

This is an amazing and informative book for anyone who is curious about the "art and soul" of Burlesque! Jo Weldon is a gorgeous, down to earth, and extremely talented performer and author and whether you're new to the game or an old pro, there is great information contained within!

I am literally reading it again for the thrid time because I simply don't want to put it down! Jo covers the basics and beyond and if you've ever considered putting on a pair of pasties and giving them a whirl, she can help with that as well! Great resource and I really enjoy Jo's style of explaining with humor and her clarity combined with her years of experience "in the biz" makes her someone I sure what to learn from!

I think this book ranks as quite possible the most definitive and "best" guide to everything anyone might need/want to know to get started in any of the various styles of Burlesque or if you simply might enjoy a "crash course" on the history and some of the finer-points of this amazing performance-art and again, it's written by someone who has seen and done it all so you cannot go wrong!

I've been a burlesque performer for 5 years and every once in awhile I go back and read this book again. I get different things out of it as an experienced performer than I did as a new performer. It's the book that keeps on giving.

Bought this for a burlesque group I joined as homework definitely a great read if you're interested in Feminism, art, colors, costumes, dancing, burlesque. Has nice illustrations and instructions and templates and patterns. Very complete book has everything you'll need to get started.
I used this handbook when I was preparing for my first burlesque act with Kitty Victorian in her Burlesque University. This book was with me all the time. It really helped me get a great context and framework for what I was doing, as well as many instructions on things like costuming and music. I would highly recommend it to everyone interested in starting off in burlesque. It's essential.
