In Bill’s words: As for the illustrations, the technique is colored pencils on various background colors. A new Bill Nelson book is welcome news: it's been far too many years since his first collection was published (FINISHING THE HAT in 1987)

In Bill’s words: As for the illustrations, the technique is colored pencils on various background colors. Sometimes I use a basic wash to fill in an area instead of trying to build it up completely with pencil. I work on anything from mat board, to recycled paper, ( with a little Canson charcoal paper thrown into the mix ). The INSPIRED WORX figures begin as heads sculpted in plasticine. A new Bill Nelson book is welcome news: it's been far too many years since his first collection was published (FINISHING THE HAT in 1987). I always loved the monster portraits he was doing early in his career for PHOTON and CINEFANTASTIQU. eply.

The book is great, and helpful in teaching art students about tone and colored pencil. But the condition my book came in was not. The 5 stars are for the actual book. My book smelled like mildew and when I looked deeper I found some visible mildew, too. I tried to air it out, but it did not work. The book was hard to find and expensive new. I took a chance on a used book and regretted it. Better luck to you.

This is one of my favorite books. I first acquired it many years ago and decided to find another copy. The book is about Bill Nelson, the colored pencil illustrator. I'm a big fan. He describes the process he goes through to complete an illustration and shows samples of his work as they come to completion. As someone who has recently discovered the joy of colored pencil for the second time, I highly recommend this book.

Nothing not to love here? The images are good size and reproduced beautifully, a rare look into a great illustrator's process, any serious students of fine illustration must have this book. One of a kind artist, a nice overview.
I read the other reviews and that is why I purchased this book. Unfortunately it disappoints. I was hoping for more and larger images of his work. I would return it but its not worth the shipping costs to do so. Just shows, you can't judge a book by its cover!
