This anthology by Christina and Fred Sommers has a nice collection of classic and contemporary writings in theoretical ethics along with some articles on applied issues. Here are some of the chapter titles: Good and Evil; Is it all Relative?; Morality and Self-interest; Moral Doctrines and Moral Theories; Virtue; Vice; Morality and Social Policy; The Meaning of Life. "Vice and Virtue in Everyday Life" discusses all the major approaches to philosophical ethics, such as moral relativism, egoism, Kantianism, utilitarianism, virtue ethics, and others. "Morality and Social Policy, which is devoted to the practical issues usually covered in "applied ethics," covers issues such as world poverty and hunger, abortion, animal rights, and affirmative action. This is a well-balanced anthology, with selections from a variety of perspectives represented.

Had some philosophy in college but felt like I missed out on an understanding of Ethics (never had a class) so I picked this up.

It is literally my favorite book and maybe the most important thing I've ever read. Not everything in here is exactly golden (some of it I wildly disagree with), but Kant's lectures were life-changing, the pope's views on contraception and the response were a great direct and clear example of religion, ethics, politics, and more. This is one of those rare books that changed who I am as a person and radically.
