Jan 16, 2017 Malcolm Stewart rated it it was amazing. James Reardon-Anderson states it was not ideology that shaped CCP foreign policy in the years leading up to the civil war; rather, Yenan’s diplomacy was shaped by the changing diplomatic and military circumstances of China in that period.

This volume explores the origins of Chinese Communist foreign policy and seeks thereby to contribute to a rethinking of modern China's foreign relations. These goals have only slowly, become clear in my mind. They were certainly not in my thoughts when more than a decade ago I first became interested in the problematic status of China's foreign-relations history. Had it not been for a set of unforeseen circumstances, my interest would not have, matured into this book. One of those circumstances was the dramatic improvement in Sino- American relations.
