Description

Zelinsky chose elements from various versions, both Grimm and earlier, to compose this adaptation. To save his wife's life, the husband steals rapunzel from this garden, only to be caught in the act by the angry sorceress.

Zelinsky chose elements from various versions, both Grimm and earlier, to compose this adaptation. The story of Rapunzel begins with a couple who, after many years together, find that they are expecting a child. But the wife is plagued by a craving for rapunzel, an herb that grows in the walled garden of the sorceress next door. To save his wife's life, the husband steals rapunzel from this garden, only to be caught in the act by the angry sorceress

This book shows the two sides of Rapunzel's adoptive mother well

This book shows the two sides of Rapunzel's adoptive mother well. You can see the love for her "daughter" in one picture and then the anger of a demon as catches Rapunzel's biological father stealing more of her plants and as she learns of Rapunzel's relationship with the prince. The fact that Rapunzel was given away by her pregnancy is much more realistic than by a moment of forgetfulness; she'd know better than to do that with the sorceress around.

I am a huge fan of illustrator Trina Schart Hyman, so I collect all of her books. The images are beautifully done and I love it. The story Rapunzel was one of my favorites as a child and this keeps very nicely to the original Grimm version, which I like. I would recommend this if you are looking for a good retelling of the story and fabulous pictures.

The classic fairy tale of Rapunzel was interesting to me. I was unaware of the dark undertone. It was a fantastic story nonetheless

Trina Schart Hyman's illustrations are phenomenal as always! Highly recommended!

Good read.

Great illustrations. I have the entire set of books-- my toddler likes them. On this specific book I am a little disappointed that there is a typo for the word "janela" on the portuguese part of the story. (It is on the page where the witch throws the prince out the window).

Got this for a friend and must say that this book was so beautifully illustrated that I can't speak highly enough of it. The artist's renderings were like the old-fashioned style that one would see in older books. Detailed and beautiful is how I would describe it.

Fans of Trina Schart Hyman's illustrations will not be disappointed. The seller is lovely and checks several times to ensure you are satisfied with your purchase -- a delightful experience all the way around. Thank you so much!!
This is a beautiful retelling the more grim Grimm tale. My four year old LOVES it (but we don't do Disney or anything like that). But I just have to say that if you are buying used books, know that Red Bicycle Books is the best used seller I have had the pleasure of dealing with. I had an issue with appearance of the book (it was not as "unused" as advertised) and they bent over backwards to make it right.
