Race And Culture: A World.

Race and Culture" runs against established views. Thomas Sowell, a black senior fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University has aroused much controversy with his 329 page-long book on race and culture. com User, June 15, 1998. His thesis runs contrary to most current trends in social sciences. And it seems incompatible with most assumptions underlying government policies and established academic notions with regard to racial and ethnic minorities.

Thomas Sowell is one of America's leading voices on matters of race and ethnicity. In his book, Inside American Education, he surveyed the ills of American education from the primary grades to graduate school with an impressive range of knowledge and acuity of observation, according to the Wall Street Journal. Now in his book Race and Culture he asks the question: What is it that allows certain groups to get ahead? and the answer will undoubtedly create debates for years to come.

Thomas Sowell, a prolific economist and senior fellow at the Hoover Institution in California, has written an important and heretical book on the relationship between race and culture–heretical, that is, as judged by the prevailing dogmas of social science. Sowell states the obvious, which apparently is not at all obvious to many social scientists: there are significant differences among cultures; some cultures are in fact superior to other cultures; and they are superior because some values, skiffs, habits of thought and practice, and ideas are superior.

Encompassing more than a decade of research around the globe, this book shows that cultural capital has far more impact than politics, prejudice, or genetics on the social and economic fates of minorities, nations, and civilization.

It is not "easy reading"- It is more like a text book than a best seller. It does offer a clear view, well documented and supported, of how different ethnic and social groups have developed over the history of civilization. It provides insight as to why some modern culture groups are failing, while other groups in the same society are doing well. If we were smarted, it would help us to resolve some of the problems in modern American society- street killings in Chicago, for example. Sadly, there are two few of us who read Sowell's work, and fewer still who are willing to act on the issues.

I read this book in 1995 and it continues to be one of my favorites. I don't claim Sowell has all the answers, but I've loved all of his books. I've given away so many copies he owes me a thank-you letter for the royalties.

Sowell is a towering thinker. When you combine his enormous grasp of history and economics with such a brilliant mind, you come out with books that don't leave the reader wondering whether the author is right. He writes with great clarity and gives you the information to decide for yourself.

Content warning: Most of Thomas Sowell's books are merely interesting and informative, but this one includes a history of slavery that's as shocking as anything you'll read about the Holocaust. Sowell is first and foremost an economist, and he describes with great clarity how a slave's fate was determined by geography and intended use. The higher the cost of training and the greater the difficulty of replacement, the longer the slave's life expectancy.

It's hard to believe how much information Sowell can put together in half a dozen pages. 60 pages into this book and you feel like you are so ignorant of the broader world, because you are amazed by how much you didn't know that are contained in only that tiny number of pages. Amazing work.

As always, Dr. Sowell's writings are stimulating and food for further thought I thoroughly enjoy this book and the insights it provides. It is a pity that so many of the current generation are ignorant of Dr. Sowell and his works.

David Mamet has said that Thomas Sowell is the greatest philosopher of the current era -- I agree. "Race and Culture" is one of the three titles in his trilogy on the creation of current world cultures. It is cogent and compelling. Sowell pulls no punches, including chapters on "Race and Intelligence" and "Race and Slavery." Sowell delves deeply into the American experience with slavery -- the "Peculiar Institution," pointing out, properly, that what was peculiar was that slavery went against America's principles, and, this was known and debated by the founders.

Sowell also points out that slavery and Africans are not synonomous. Sowell points out that the very word slave is derived for the word "Slav" in English and related words in Arabic, Dutch, and many other languages. He also points out that there were slaves in the Western Hemisphere when Columbus arrived. Indeed, he points out, slavery is as old as written history.

What Sowell does with this book is to explicate slavery, to give it context, and, ultimately, to paint it for the evil it is.

It's Sowell. Expect nothing less than a great read. His books are very well researched, explained, and reasoned. Agree or disagree with his views they certainly are interesting to consider.
I thoroughly enjoyed Sowell's book on Race and Culture, and found it to be a valuable reference in my research on terrorist organizational behavior and leadership Terrorist Organizational Behavior(ISBN-13: 978-0615687391). The numerous examples made it easily accessible and digestible. I recommend this book to those interested in the behaviors of groups and cultures, particularly as an alternate reference when researching terrorism.
