Description

La Terra in Piazza shows how much of this civic success can be traced to the ritual of the Palio, which engages the year-around . Just got back from the July 2nd, 2000 Palio. It was a fabulous event. Transports you back in time. This is a great book.

La Terra in Piazza shows how much of this civic success can be traced to the ritual of the Palio, which engages the year-around attention of the entire citizenry. Gets into a lot of details about the Palio event.

La Terra is the most enjoyable cultural anthropology that I have ever encountered. Although Siena is widely acclaimed by tourists, few people understand that it has been a successful city for more than 800 years, with virtually no crime or poverty, a fine university, extraordinary civic design, and public health and education systems that operate at high levels. Few cities in the world with a population comparable to Siena (about 70,000), can lay claim to such accomplishments

Though in print for many decades now, the book holds up over time---perhaps because its subject matter does the same (for many hundreds of years now). I have been using this volume as a reference for my own book in which the Palio tradition and the Sienese contrade figure prominently. It is comprehensive and has proven indispensable to my work.
Most telling about this book's quality is the fact that it was recommended to me by the consortium for the protection of the Palio. As the name implies, this Siena-based organization concerns itself with preservation of Siena's most prominent festival. It would not recommend just any book. It would only recommend a book that was accurate and complete (insomuch as any book is capable of completely capturing the intricacies and enormity of this cultural phenomenon). The book has breadth and depth, and would be useful to the scholar and casual Paliophile, alike.

There is one particular failing in the book, in my opinion, and perhaps it arises from the decade during which the book was first published (1970's) and its largely uncritical fascination with Freudian theory. The last chapter of this book "The Palio as a Metaphor for Sienese Worldview", with its apparently unexamined acceptance of some of the more outdated and truly absurd Freudian interpretive angles, did not add anything to this otherwise exceptional volume. The imposition of gender-biased sexual interpretations of the Palio's symbols and ceremonies says less about the "Sienese world-view" than it does about Freud's and an archaic academe's worldview. Parts of it were actually laugh-out-loud funny, but I doubt this is what the author was aiming for. Still, the rest of the book is so thorough and useful that even this unfortunate indulgence on the author's part can't diminish the book as a whole.

This book is the DEFINITIVE Pallio text. Hundreds of books have been written on this fascinating annual festival, but few capture the very unique history and local feel for this event. The book is quite correct by letting the reader know this is not just a horse race...rather it is a way of living for the Sienese. It is life itself to them. This text captures all that and more. If you want Pallio primer...look no further than this book.
