This paper deals with genitive variation in English as a case of grammatical variation. In: Sven Jacobson (e., Papers from the Scandinavian Symposium on Syntactic Variation. Stockholm Studies in English 52. In particular, it explores the extent to which the factors animacy, topicality and possessive relation affect the choice between the s-genitive and the o/-genitive. In an experimental study with British and American speakers of English these predictions are tested and indeed confirmed.
