Great book for those starting out the learn Portuguese. The text is relatively easy to read for an intermediate level student and the story is very interesting. Lot's of magical thinking built-in, but you would have to expect that with a title like O Alquimista.

His quest will lead him to riches far different-and far more satisfying-than he ever imagined. Santiago's journey teaches us about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, of recognizing opportunity and learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, most importantly, to follow our dreams

Paulo Coelho’s life may well be itself worthy of a homely book

Paulo Coelho’s life may well be itself worthy of a homely book. During his adolescence he was committed to a psychiatric hospital by his own parents, who believed that his rebellious attitude was a sign of madness; it was under such parental guidance that he was subjected to the horrors of electroshock therapy. In his twenties, Coelho dropped out of law school to travel around South America; he later became a journalist. After a life-changing pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, he decided to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a writer. Here are 10 of his most memorable novels.

The “philosophy” in this book is so common place that it’s hard to know what is original and what is not. It is a silly story about a shepherd and his trip to Egypt to find his “Personal Legend”. I would consider it more like a self-help book because the story in itself has little to no value. Coelho tries to unify the teachings of Christianity and Islam with a little bit of Conny Mendez’s style metaphysics and a sprinkle of pantheism. The moral of the story is nothing you haven’t heard in every other pop song out there “Your treasure is within yourself”. The only thing I must recognize is that the twist that resolves the story at the end of the book was quite satisfactory and well achieved.

The Portuguese in this book is very simple. I'm not a native speaker, but I've studied Portuguese, and I was able to read almost all of it without reference to a dictionary. That's a very positive point to this book. It's also very well-written and intriguing ... but very short. Still, I enjoyed it thoroughly. I only give it 4 stars due to some issues that I don't want to write here because I don't want to spoil anything for you. Despite my critiques, I think it's well worth reading!

Paulo Coelho is a master of the Portuguese language as well as a master of telling stories. I have read this book a couple of times in English and thought that it would be easy to understand in Portuguese but I was wrong. If you are a beginner of Portuguese language and looking for a book to practice this is not it. I will try it again when I feel more comfotable with the language.

I love Paulo Coelho and expected more from this famous book. I like the message, but it’s not a book that gets you stuck on it and looking forward to read it. I’m disappointed.

I read this book in French when I was 13 as a school assignment, in English in my 30s and in Portuguese now. It is my favorite inspirational book. Great imagery and storytelling. I probably gifted this over 10 times over the years. A must read!
Adorei este livro! O linguagem que Paulo utiliza é noble, bonito, e profundo!
