Doing Optimality Theory book. Doing Optimality Theory brings together examples and practical, detailed advice for undergraduates and graduate students working in linguistics. Given that the basic premises of Optimality Theory are markedly different from other linguistic theories, this book presents the analytic techniques and new ways of thinking and theorizing that are required.

Modeling ungrammaticality in Optimality Theory

Modeling ungrammaticality in Optimality Theory. Advances in Optimality Theory. London & Oakville, Conn. This paper demonstrates that altering the mode of constraint interaction from strict ranking as in Optimality Theory to additive weighting as in Harmonic Grammar (HG) reduces the number of classes of constraints that must be distinguished by such biases. Using weighted constraints and a version of the Gradual Learning Algorithm (GLA), the only distinction needed is between Output-based constraints, which must be biased toward high weights, and Input-Output-based constraints, which must be biased toward the lowest weights possible.

Doing Optimality Theory: Applying Theory to Data.

Although much of the interest in Optimality Theory has been associated with its use in phonology, the area to which Optimality Theory was first applied, the theory is also applicable to other subfields of linguistics (. syntax and semantics). Doing Optimality Theory: Applying Theory to Data.

Doing Optimality Theory brings together examples andpractical, detailed advice for undergraduates and graduate studentsworking in linguistics. Given that the basic premises of OptimalityTheory are markedly different from other linguistic theories, thisbook presents the analytic techniques and new ways of thinking andtheorizing that are required.Explains how to do analysis and research using OptimalityTheory (OT) - a branch of phonology that has revolutionized thefield since its conception in 1993Offers practical, in-depth advice for students and researchersin the field, presented in an engaging wayFeatures numerous examples, questions, and exercisesthroughout, all helping to illustrate the theory and summarize thecore concepts of OTWritten by John J. McCarthy, one of the theory’s leadingproponents and an instrumental figure in the dissemination and useof OT todayAn ideal guide through the intricacies of linguistic analysisand research for beginning researchers, and, by example, one whichwill lead the way to future developments in the field.
